Ruta x WITPAX – Custom Paperboard Drawer Boxes for Chocolate

Client Name: Ruta
Product: Custom Paperboard Drawer Boxes for Chocolate
Ruta is a company specializing in chocolates, and they needed custom paperboard drawer boxes for their products. This was their first experience ordering custom packaging, and the challenge was to get the design just right and ensure the boxes were durable and functional for shipping. This case study highlights the process WITPAX followed to meet Ruta’s requirements and build a strong business relationship.
Challenge
Ruta’s first order was based on a simple 2D design and the need for packaging that would present their chocolate products beautifully. The key challenges included:
- First-Time Order:
Ruta was new to ordering custom packaging, so they only had a rough idea of the design and had little experience with the details of packaging production. - Design and Material Confusion:
There was some confusion regarding the sticker material for the window. Ruta requested a non-adhesive sticker, but the final order was made with a paperboard sticker instead of the non-adhesive option. - EU Certification Requirements:
After receiving the first batch, Ruta requested documentation for food certifications, including CE and EU food safety standards. This required WITPAX to adjust the packaging process for future orders.

Solution
WITPAX worked closely with Ruta to ensure that the packaging met all the required standards and adjusted the process for future orders.
- Clear Design Communication:
The first order was based on a rough 2D layout. After Ruta confirmed the knife-line design, WITPAX proceeded with the production, ensuring the box met the client’s expectations. - Sticker Material Adjustment:
During the first production run, a mistake was made regarding the sticker material. Ruta had requested a non-adhesive sticker, but the boxes were made with paperboard stickers. However, Ruta was satisfied with the result, and the issue did not negatively impact the relationship. - EU Certifications:
After Ruta received the first batch of boxes, they asked for the necessary food certifications to comply with EU standards. WITPAX provided the documentation required, and moving forward, all future orders were produced to meet these new requirements. - Repeat Orders and Quality Adjustments:
After the first successful order, Ruta placed two additional orders. For the most recent order, just before Christmas, WITPAX proposed a cost-saving strategy due to a significant increase in shipping costs. They suggested that Ruta place the order early, and WITPAX would hold off on charging for shipping until after Christmas, when shipping costs were expected to drop.
In addition, the most recent batch addressed minor issues from the first order, including fixing glue issues on the boxes and ensuring the ribbons were applied correctly.
Results
The collaboration between Ruta and WITPAX resulted in a successful packaging solution that met Ruta’s needs.
- Cost Savings:
WITPAX helped Ruta save on shipping costs by delaying the payment for freight until after the holiday season when rates were expected to go down. - Improved Packaging Quality:
After the first order, quality improvements were made to address issues such as box adhesive problems and ribbon application. The latest order was much more refined, with these issues fixed. - Client Satisfaction and Repeat Business:
Ruta was pleased with the product quality and WITPAX’s proactive approach. The successful handling of certifications and product adjustments led to two more orders, cementing the ongoing business relationship.
